We just completed our first 9-week YOU Life Skills for High School Seniors at San Bernardino High School, in San Bernardino, California. What a great group of kids!
The course consisted of an identity unit in which students completed an identity wheel. They learned about how they have been using their cultural identity to make all their decisions, often because that’s really all they know about themselves.
After completing a Taking Flight with DISC profile and discovering their Core Values, students wrote a values statement as a guide for their life. They learned how to make better decision using the inner circles of their identity wheel (Personality and Values), and they delved into decision making of college and career. Finally, we rounded out the course with practice interview questions and interview etiquette.
Overall, students felt the program offered information they wouldn’t otherwise have learned, and they were glad they had this opportunity.
Jaime Liscano said he felt this program will help him more fully reach his potential because he understands himself better.
Elidia Arevalo wishes she had been able to participate in the program during her junior year. She said, “I wish I knew in my junior year what I know now because it would give me more of a boost.”
While several students felt the greatest benefit was the opportunity to apply for the YOU Life Skills and Leadership Educational Foundation Scholarship, other students commented on how they felt the most important part was practicing the interview questions and talking about how to be successful, noting that they usually don’t get that information in school.
Perhaps the comment that summed up what most students seemed to relate about their experience was expressed by Juan Zuniga when he said, “This class helped with knowing our worth and what we can do for a better future.”
